Mitjili Napurrula - Artist of unique and extreme talent!

MITJILI NAPURRULA

LANGUAGE: Pintupi

AREA: Haasts Bluff, NT

Mitjili is a Pintupi woman from the Haasts Bluff region in the Northern Territory. Mitjili began painting at the Ikuntji Womens Centre in 1993.

Mitjili comes from a prestigious family, both of artists and community leaders. Her father was Tupa Tjakamarra and her brother the late Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula who was a very important member of Papunya Tula artists.

Mitjili paints her father's country: the pristine sandhills, bushes and trees of Uwalki. Uwalki country is about 200km’s south of Uluru near Kintore, situated in the Gibson Desert.Mitjili is custodian of the Spear Dreaming (Kulata Tjurrkupa) and paints elements of her families Dreaming only women are allowed to depict. She paints the root system, landscape and location of the plant (Watiya Tjuta) that are used to make spears and other wooden objects, by the male members of her family.

Mitjili’s style and depiction of her Dreaming story, is highly unique and personal. She grew up surrounded by the influences of Papunya Tula artists and their style, yet once she connected back with her community in Haasts Bluff, she was inspired to create a representation of her Dreaming that was like no other. She uses a technique of bold, graphic blocks of colour applied to the canvas, which follows with the story being layered on by “stippling” (a form of dot work) the shapes, which represent her Dreaming story. Mitjili also draws on the influence and direction of her mother, which she was given as a younger woman learning and understanding her family’s stories.

Mitjili’s work is amongst a caliber of artists whose paintings are collected and sought after by the most important public and private collections, both across Australia and Internationally. She is defiantly an artist whose work will be recognised for years to come!

Leah' Pick - Julie Pengarte 'Honey Ant Dreaming'

I love this little painting by Julie, it is bright and playful and reminds me of my trip to Alice Springs in May. I was shown the Honey Ant, while out in Utopia. The strong yellow tones really represent the honey ant perfectly, when it is full of honey, the body of the ant is a brilliant yellow / orange!

Kate's Pick - Walala Tjapaltjarri 'Tingari Men's Creation Dreaming'

Walala has a magnificent style, his paintings are structured and symetric in composition yet have a freedom and spacial quality about them. He also uses really beautiful colour combinations, which make his paintings a winner for me!

Alesha's Pick - Ruth Stewart Napaltjarri 'Budgerigar Dreaming'

This 30 x 30 cm painting by Ruth, is really beautiful! It is bright, bold, colourful and she has shown great skill in her application. I really love the cross like shapes that represent the budgerigar's footprints in the land - it reminds me of the many budgerigars we had as pets when were kids - who can't have a soft spot for a bit of Budgerigar Dreaming?
